This is the Blackwater in absolutely fine fettle this morning.

The recent rain only brought the river up 12 cm by Saturday morning to 0.46m on the gauge.

It’s down to 0.36m @ 18.45 this evening.

No fish taken today, but a couple seen again on Ballygally.

Conditions are absolutely perfect. Clarity about 4 feet, water temp. 47F.

Beautiful fly height with summer level.

Our Opening Day celebration is now fully subscribed only a couple of days after it was announced in our December 30th. newsletter. We offered free fishing & casting clinic throughout the day with Glenda, ending with a bowl of hot stew for everybody at the fishing hut on Upper Kilmurry at 4.00pm.

Hopefully, we’ll have a springer or two to report.

July had been ticking along quite steadily, with fish caught most days.
There were only 4 blank days which were all at the beginning of the month.
The last flood on July 18th. got the grilse moving in good numbers,
and we have seen good runs of fish going through both the lower & upper beats.
The river has fined off beautifully with clarity now about 4 feet.

So far for July, 54 fish to 14lb have been caught.
Of these, 24 have been caught in the last 3 days where the daily count is 10, 5 & 8 fish respectively.
Fly, spinner & worm have all caught almost exactly the same number of fish.

The 20th was the Best Day of the Season.
On the 21st., 5 to 10lb. were caught – and no less than 3 were First Ever salmon.
Husband & wife Jake & Jess Hiltz (USA) both caught their first guided by Glenda on the upper river,
& Marino Bellini (Italy) took his first also on the upper river.

Yesterday (22nd.) nine were taken (7 grilse & salmon of 10 & 11½lb.) including another First Ever,
with more now being caught on the lower river  as it fines off.

Margaret is a very accomplished chef, and her kitchen produces wonderful food, so says John and thousands of happy guests.

Nimmitabel is one of Australia’s highest towns at an elevation of 1080 metres. Situated 35 km south of Cooma on the Snowy Mountains Highway, it is less than 5 hours drive from Sydney or 7 hours from Melbourne. This is a great place to relax for a few days. Clear, cool high country air and the slower pace of a small village.

The motel is situated off the highway at the northern end of Nimmitabel village, with parking at the door of your room. A small friendly place, there are just ten quiet, comfortable rooms with en suite bathrooms, all at ground level. Each room has TV, refrigerator, tea and coffee making facilities, heating, and electric blankets on all beds.

There are opportunities for all kinds of trout fly fishing in the Snowy-Monaro region. Nimmitabel is an ideal centre, with easy access in a few minutes to some excellent streams. Less than an hour’s drive can take you to fast flowing Snowy Mountain rivers or by heading south to some very attractive river fishing in the Bombala and Delegate area.

Experienced fly fishers are drawn to Nimmitabel by the prospect of casting their flies to trophy sized fish that they can see cruising around and rising to excellent mayfly hatches.There are three streams close by that are classified ‘Blue Ribbon’ by the Fisheries Department where this kind of fishing is possible when conditions are suitable.

While exploring the region’s rivers on your own can be fun, having an experienced guide will greatly improve your chances of finding the best fishing available. Situated on the A497, just 3 1/2 miles from Porthmadog and 1 1/2 miles from Criccieth, which is just a 15 minute walk, with shops, petrol stations, public houses, cafes, restaurants, beach and a post office. Criccieth Castle is always worth a visit as the views around the bay are breathtaking. Also you cannot visit Criccieth without tasting the famous Cadwalladers ice cream.

Directions: Come into Porthmadog and at the roundabout, turn on the A497 towards Criccieth. Follow this road for 3 1/2 miles, through Pentrefelin, take 1st right after the Plas Gwyn to ‘Eisteddfa Caravan & Camping Park’. Then take 1st left into the park. Reception is at the Lodge as you turn right.
