2010 Salmon Season Report from Blackwater Lodge
Finally, I have completed a report on the 2010 Season on Blackwater Lodge Salmon Fishery. This can be found on:

www.ireland-salmon-fishing.net/FishingReport/Old/2010/2010season.htm

Season Total: 652 for 1,342 rod days (0.49 fish/rod day).

July Total: 168 for 183 rod days.

(The Best July since 2000 when 263 were caught for 750 rod days)

Best Day of the Season: September 26 – 26 fish to 16lb.

Best Catch for One Rod: Eleven fish on September 21st.

Number of First Ever Salmon: Thirty-five in total for the season.

………………………………………………..Highest Ever for the months of May & June.

………………………………………………..Second Highest for the month of September.

………………………………………………..Eighth Highest for July.

The Draft Proposals for the Wild Salmon & Seatrout Tagging Scheme Regulations for the 2011 Season

were issued on Friday, November 19.

The quota for the Blackwater has been raised to 5,859 from the 2010 quota which was 5,054.

The number of tags for the spring (February 1 to May 11) has not been confirmed yet.

Last year, it was one tag for the Blackwater but this was only announced in a Byelaw issued on December 17, 2009 so we are still waiting to hear if it will be one or three tags.

The Huge Run of Fish continues

I was talking to Fishery Board staff at the excellent Irish Fly Fair in Galway last weekend

& got the latest on the runs of fish into the Blackwater.

There were reports of 7,500 fish that had run into the river in the 8 days from October 27.

Just before the Fair on the weekend of November 13/14, this figure had jumped to over 15,000………………..!

This bodes well for our future stocks of salmon.

Fort Smith, Montana
Fort Smith is a small quiet town, a former cavalry outpost, nestled in the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains, Montana. It is a favorite destination for many anglers throughout the country.

If you’re planning a trip to fish the Bighorn River , the nearest commercial airport to Fort Smith Montana is in Billings which is approximately 55 miles west of Hardin, 1.5 hours drive. Hardin is 45 minutes drive away from Fort Smith. Fort Smith will welcome you with its array of quality restaurants, accommodations, shops, and service readily available along the Bighorn River.

Visit fortsmithmontana.com for more information.

Fly Fishing in Fort Smith, Montana
Montana can be hailed as the state of fly fishing legend. Anglers from all over the globe trek to Montana to experience these trophy trout rivers and pristine mountain lakes.

With populations of trout around 7000 fish per mile, sized well over fourteen inches on this river, Bighorn deserves its reputation as a world-class trout stream.

The Bighorn River
Located in South-central Montana is the epicenter for Western fly fishing adventures. Fort Smith Montana is the first place you should plan to visit on a fly fishing trip since the most productive section of river starts at the Afterbay Dam in Fort Smith and runs approximately 46 miles to the town of Hardin.

From the dam in Fort Smith, anglers can float fish down to the access points along the river like the Three Mile, Bighorn, Mallards Landing, and Two Leggins of which the most popular stretch is from afterbay to the Bighorn access.

The Bighorn rivers water is cold throughout the season with the help of the tailwater dam just above Fort Smith. Dry fly fishing opportunities on the Bighorn is ideal especially on overcast days, mornings, or late afternoons and evenings.

Alaska adventurers from around the world come back year after year to experience the magnificent scenery, world class fishing, and our first rate accommodations on the Kenai Peninsula.

Alaska Mountainview Cabins are centrally located on the beautiful Kenai Peninsula, just south of Anchorage (160 miles) and just north of Soldotna & Kenai, and an easy 15 minute walk to the famous Kenai River, via Morgan’s Landing State Recreation Area.

Outdoor activities are numerous and varied on the Kenai. Besides spectacular salmon fishing, there is also trout and record-breaking halibut fishing. Clams are plentiful and clam digging excursions can be guided or you can hit the beach with a shovel and bucket on your own.

So whether you’re interested in putting together a corporate retreat, a romantic weekend getaway, planning a family reunion, gathering information for a men’s or women’s retreat, or planning your honeymoon, please contact us and we’ll make every effort to help bring it all together for you!

The very best flyfishing in Kola Peninsula, arctic Russia for large Atlantic salmon & trophy wild brown trout!

Untouched wild nature, clear water and clean air combined with excellent fishing make the Varzina Lodge truly a world class fishing destination.

The Lodge main building contains our gourmet kitchen, a spacious dining room and a fully supplied lounge bar. It is also equipped with a satellite-operated TV, phone, fax, and e-mail facilities. A specialized fly-shop is also available. There are two separate saunas with hot showers available daily. A four-person cabin with its own sauna and a small living room is also available. The Varzina experience is limited to satisfy 16 anglers per week.

All our rivers support wild populations of really large and truly strong Atlantic salmon. Fish up to 35 lbs. and more, crystal clear water, great variety of rivers all with huge number of fishable pools – These are the elements that combine to make the unforgettable Varzina salmon experience.

We can offer easy fishing and instruction to any beginner and most challenging pools to the demanding salmon connoisseur.

Daily helicopter flights take fishermen to the pools that are at their prime condition for fishing . There is one experienced guide available for each two fishermen. Our international guides know the area well and can help with fish spotting, fly selection and casting problems as necessary.

The first early salmon are all huge. They run from June to early July. Then the mid-sized fish follow and finally also the numerous grilse fill all the pools. Fresh run, sea-liced fish can be found even high up in all the rivers throughout the whole season.

The Varzina brown trout fishing is really one of the seven wonders of the fishing world. No other place in the world can offer brown trout fishing of this quality and variety. Otherwise normal trophy trout is just one average fish in our rivers.

Specially late in the season there is no end to the trout averaging well over 22 inches. These are really wild, heavyweight fighting fish that will amaze even the most jaded trout angler. We just might call your sixth (of the day) double figure fish a trophy…

The excellent fishing combined with first class accommodation, service and guiding will make your holiday one that you’ll really remember forever.

Magallanes Fly Fishing offers in Tierra del Fuego, Chile, the best brown and sea trout fishing in Chilean Patagonia. Rafael González, one of the most experienced local guides and new Cameron Lodge, invites you to fish these fabulous waters, with more than forty kilometres of river to your disposal.

The Rio Grande is the largest river on the Tierra del Fuego island and is well known for its huge sea trout and the solitude of the countryside.

Our Lodge is the Estancia, Cameron’s recently refurbished administration house, built on a high cliff, with a great view over the Darwin Range and less than one hundred yards from the Río Grande. This Estancia has about fifty kilometers of frontage on the north side of the Río Grande (all the way down stream to the Argentinean border)

You will especially enjoy the solitude of having this splendid fishery to yourself with the chance of fishing yet unnamed pools where few outsiders have ever cast a fly

It’s an excellent river for flyfishing, sometimes more challenging and rewarding than downstream in Argentina, due to the different techniques and finesse that have to be employed. The water is much clearer, and maintains it’s clarity, even in higher flows. The fishing is also rewarding because there’s always action.

In this section of the river sea run browns average ten pounds, with monsters up to eighteen/twenty pounds. On occasion we’ll even land really huge fish, well over twelve kilos (twenty six pounds)!!! Unlike the lower Argentinean section of the river, there are also resident river browns up to the six pound class, beautifully coloured fish that readily take our flies.

In addition, anglers will find some healthy, “chromer” lake run browns, with the shape of a rugby ball, that enter the river from the Blanco lake for our enjoyment. And, completing the ‘Grand Slam’, there are rainbows too! You will see them some meters from you, down stream, feeding on the aquatic insects you kick up from the bottom of the river. It’s something to be seen!!!

The fishing season on the Río Grande runs from October through April. In November and December the fishing is very good, but the peak months are January, February, March and April.

For serious anglers who wish to escape from civilization Lucky Tour has designed a trout and grayling fishing tour on the Armu, a river that runs through an ecologically clean area of Primorye, the Maritime Province of the Russian Far East.

The river runs at 2.5-4.5 miles per hour into the Bolshaya Ussurka river, which itself flows into the Ussuri river, a tributary of the great Armu river, (10th longest in the world), which eventually flows into the Tatar Channel. Our Armu river is about 7 ft deep, and over 250 ft across at the mouth. The water is crystal pure, guaranteed by the presence of numerous stone-flies which only live in pure water. (Local black stone-flies thrive in the Armu and grow enromous to almost 1,5 inches long!!!)

In addition to the two species of trout and one of grayling in the Armu river, the prize fish is the famed (Hucho Taimen ‘Master of Siberian rivers’) which can weigh in at 150 pounds and measure over six feet long. These Goliaths are scarce; but the more usual 30 pound taimen will still give you a good fight. Note that most taimen have to be released.

All spinning and fly-fishing techniques are suitable but remember that you will be fishing in fast flowing streams of the Armu and the Bolshaya Ussurka. Shallow water and bank fishing from small river islands will be the usual pattern, but our fishing tour will also include drift-boat fishing and boat fishing in the quieter reaches of the rivers. Heavily wooded banks make it almost impossible to fish from the river bank.

We offer you a unique local fishing technique which is called ‘mouse’ fishing. At night, mice, squirrels and other mouse-like small animals become active and often fall down from the bank and riverside trees into the water. While these small animals can swim in the water, they often become prey to the trout. ‘Mouse’ fishing, simulating this habitual night-time activity, is spin fishing with a foldable mouse-plug. ‘Mouse’ fishing is a common local technique to catch the Taimen and is also a very effective method to hook the angler’s heart.

Fishing season:

Open water trout and grayling fishing is available between the last week of March and the first week of November, with a three-week break in May during the spawning season. Mosquitoes and other bloodsucking flying insects are numerous between July and 15th of August, and nearly absent before June and after 15th September. The golden season for fishing and exploring the Taiga lasts between mid-September and early November, when the river closes for the winter.

We take great pride in our specialty tours and do everything to ensure satisfaction and complete safety for visitors

Our guides will make sure you have an enjoyable experience to remember.

A remote and very beautiful, clear flowing, fair-sized river that flows off the slopes of the immense Ichinskaya Volcano in western Kamchatka.

Access to upper river forks by helicopter from town of Esso, skirting the immense and impressive, snow-capped volcano. Put-in on any one of three swift forks, to float quickly through the mountains on this very scenic river. Good fishing for salmon (lots of chums, sockeye and pink, some coho and maybe Masu?). Excellent fishing for big rainbow trout and charr (mostly dollies and some Kundzha. Lots of wildlife-bears, ducks and eagles.

Can be flyfished for much of its length, but intermittent large deep pools from mid-section down would best be probed with spinning gear.

This river fishes best in August and September.

Welcome to the Golden West Women Flyfishers, the most exciting club in San Francisco!

We started out in 1983 as two friends getting together to start a club, and now we have about 150 women who meet and FLY FISH.

On the second Tuesday of every other month (except for June, July and August), we meet to exchange fishing stories and ideas, and to learn from one another and experts who are invited to do programs and spend a very social and convivial evening.

We have fishing outings, several a month during the fishing season.

We have conservation projects, the most important being the urban in-school aquatic program which has hundreds of children very excited about cleaning up a stream and incubating and raising native trout and other sensitive riparian and aquatic species. They then release them into the streams they have adopted.

And we have a bi-yearly fundraiser to finance all the projects we are involved in.

Some of our members are complete beginners and learn from our more experienced members. We have a good time together and have made friendships which are going strong after many years.

Golden West outings are the heart and soul of our club.

We take off for spots all over Northern California on a dozen or so trips a year that range from a day to a week, from float tubing lakes to boating spring creeks to horse packing small streams to tackling blue ribbon trout rivers like the Pit, the Trinity or the Truckee. Most trips are over weekends, when we’ll stay in cabins or motels, but camping is often arranged. Occasionally we plan a more far-flung trip, to Oregon or Montana, or even further afield like Belize or Alaska.

When it comes to preserving a healthy environment, GWWF is committed to action.

We monitor environmental legislation, bombard decision makers with our position, and volunteer to put our muscle where our mouth is to participate in cleanup projects

If you are a woman in the San Francisco Bay Area who is interested in flyfishing, come join the Golden West Women Flyfishers (GWWF)!

As founder and current President of the GWWF, I personally invite you to become one of us.

Welcome aboard with Capt. Rich for a day fishing the waters of Marco Island in Southwest Florida. Hes a seasoned Florida fishing guide, and knows where the most productive fishing grounds are located.

We will target all species of fish that inhabit the backwaters of the 10,000 Islands. Some fish are seasonal with warmer or cooler water temperatures. Contact Capt. Rich for a great day of fishing the backwaters of the 10,000 Islands.

Fishing on Floridas West Coast at Marco Island provides some of the greatest fishing action in the world. You can fish for Snook, Redfish, Tarpon, Trout, Mackeral, Pompano, Snapper and Shark. If you’ve never caught a tarpon, you havent experienced fishing!

You’ll fish the Florida back country and flats in a specially rigged flats boat, using the lightest graphite rods with Diawa SS Whisker tournament reels, to land the biggest fish on live bait, freshly cast netted Green back shinners, thread-fins, and mullet when available, or by using live shrimp. Fly fishing also available.

The 1999 Bay & Flats is powered by a 2001 Mercury outboard, and rigged with a Great White trolling motor, poling stand and jackplate. Licenses, bottled water, ice, and soda provided. 1-2 anglers recommended for fishing comfort.

John and Margaret Killip left city life, and suits, behind 24 years ago when they decided to get more fun out of life doing what they enjoy. John loves fly fishing for trout, and even now still talks about it endlessly, so Margaret says. Margaret is a very accomplished chef, and her kitchen produces wonderful food, so says John and thousands of happy guests.

Nimmitabel is one of Australia’s highest towns at an elevation of 1080 metres. Situated 35 km south of Cooma on the Snowy Mountains Highway, it is less than 5 hours drive from Sydney or 7 hours from Melbourne. This is a great place to relax for a few days. Clear, cool high country air and the slower pace of a small village.

The motel is situated off the highway at the northern end of Nimmitabel village, with parking at the door of your room. A small friendly place, there are just ten quiet, comfortable rooms with en suite bathrooms, all at ground level. Each room has TV, refrigerator, tea and coffee making facilities, heating, and electric blankets on all beds.

There are opportunities for all kinds of trout fly fishing in the Snowy-Monaro region. Nimmitabel is an ideal centre, with easy access in a few minutes to some excellent streams. Less than an hour’s drive can take you to fast flowing Snowy Mountain rivers or by heading south to some very attractive river fishing in the Bombala and Delegate area.

Experienced fly fishers are drawn to Nimmitabel by the prospect of casting their flies to trophy sized fish that they can see cruising around and rising to excellent mayfly hatches. There are three streams close by that are classified ‘Blue Ribbon’ by the Fisheries Department where this kind of fishing is possible when conditions are suitable.

While exploring the region’s rivers on your own can be fun, having an experienced guide will greatly improve your chances of finding the best fishing available. John, President of the Professional Fishing Instructors and Guides Association, is one of Australia’s best known fly fishing identities. His guiding service is exclusive to motel guests.
